knXwl3dG3 - live dublab set 2.24.08

Here at the doctors office, certain interweb localities are of constant interest. If you haven't heard, dublab.com is an excellent source of up and coming new music broken via the web. as a regular podcast subscriber, doc tee takes chances at the dances, and he recommends you to do the same. for instance, check out but one of the many sultry offerings via dublab.com - knXwl3dG3: a philly beatmaker of an astral projectionist nature. if you like hip hop production of the FlyLo, Jel, Quas styling - peep it. though its a set from earlier this year, its got a spacey boom bap thats sort of eternal. check his myspace page too.

Janelle Monae - Metropolis: The Chase Suite - special edition (2008)

Metropolis: the chase suite - special edition (2008)

This is the ep re-release post signing with bad boy/atlantic records.
Do not sleep on this any longer than the somnabulent doctor T did. 2 years later doc tee wakes up to a concept album to bumrush all other concept albums of the day (but really how many concept albums are out now that are offering up social commentary enclosed within a story about an android who breaks the law by falling in love with a human). The android, named Cindi Mayweather, goes on the run, from bounty hunters set on disassembling her for this infraction. Basically the album is about her odyssey on the lam. oh, and its set in the year 2719. hot.

Sound wise, if you can get down with Sa-Ra Creative Partners, your ears will prick up for a listen.

check the video for "sincerely, jane." it'll getcha.

myloveilove - Bogdan Raczynski

Dr. T had slept on Bogdan Raczynski. "MyLoveILove", though often quoted as a quick quip during intimate moments, had no sonic bearing for the good doctor until recently.
This album is perfect to engage autumn with, sniffles subdued as the summer fades away, a fling with a inconstant season, that maybe some of us got too attached to. Global climate change keeps playing with our hearts and the seasons make less sense, until you put this record on.
Welcome to the fall of 2009.
(still pertinent though recorded in 2001, how about that?!)
Get in touch with the inspiration behind the record, and why every track is myloveilove, plus the SFweekly review from 8 years back that questioned the sincerity of "the working man's julio iglesias".

Flying Lotus - Reset ep

RESET
FlyLo's ep from 2007. damn sexyness. doctor approved.

Ducktails - landscapes

Dr. T is still trying to make sense of the "tropical" moniker for the genre of shoegazey sort of ambient noise melodiousness emanating from the l.a. scene and various environs scattered. in the meanwhile please enjoy some of the very best this calamitous genre has to offer with Ducktails, the solo project of Matt Mondanile, of Predator Vision fame.

Moondog - Moondog on the streets of New York

Moondog - on the streets of new york
this is just a sampling of the sounds Moondog made.
T just caught wind of this last month. still trying to piece it all together, Moondog was a new york legend and a seriously weird experimental musician living and thriving on 6th avenue. for more info do it the easy way and check the wikipage.

Repo Man - original motion picture soundtrack

Best weirdo punk soundtrack of all time. The doctor had the soundtrack on cassette perpetually on repeat between ages 9 and 11. Highlights include - Bad Man by the juicy bananas, institutionalized by suicidal tendencies and (of course) repo man by iggy pop.
Great movie, great soundtrack - great for early summer.

Here come the Girls - Ernie K-Doe

Here come the girls an Ernie K-Doe original.
Ernie K-Doe was a NOLA original himself, and this particular track was featured on Soul Jazz's New Orleans Funk compilation put out a few years ago. For more info about the man check out not only the wiki article but also the site dedicated to the memory of this New Orleans legend.

Here come the girls - Ernie K-Doe

This verse pretty much sums up Doc Tee's stance on ladies.

"i can live w/o coffee
i can live w/o tea...
and oohh water
i don't need no lemonade...
but to live w/o girls,
i can't live w/o girls
like a man with a hole in his head..."

Inspiration Information 3 - Mulatu Astatke & the Heliocentrics

Inspiration Information 3 by Mulatu Astatke & the Heliocentrics

Mulatu Astatke is famous for basically inventing the ethio-jazz game. Check out volume 4 of the Ethiopiques series for an extensive introduction to the arrangements this musically inventive jazz organizer is world renowned for. His signature instrument is the Vibraphone. nuff said.
The Heliocentrics are a british funk/soul/world/hiphop/jazz genre defying band led by drummer malcolm catto and carried by the stones throw label of which the doctor is oh so fond.
This album is collaborative tag team of groovin genius. Play this for the ladies.

Cold Fact - Rodriguez

Rodriguez was slept on for almost 40 years.
From Detroit (home to amazing musical genius of many a genre), Sixto Diaz Rodriguez or simply know as Rodriguez, released a record named Cold Fact way back in 1970. Cold Fact finally caught some serious notice in the last few years and was officially re-released last year in 2008 on the Light In the Attic label.
Rodriguez has been reported to be the missing link between Bob Dylan and Marvin Gaye.
Dr. T argues rather that Rodriguez's music and lyricism is more in the same lineage as Richie Havens and Curtis Mayfield.
While Cold Fact was a hit for many in far flung locales such as Australia and South Africa, in the West, Rodriguez got not love. In response to a not so hot reception to his music stateside, Rodriguez was M.I.A. until being unearthed by David Holmes in 2002 when Holmes found a copy of Cold Fact whilst cratedigging. The rest is a blessing.
Dr. T recently came across a live performance on a favored podcast: Dublab.com, and found this amazing never heard before artist.
Cold Fact is an interesting listen; the songs are an intense intermingling of vehement and vague; political and personal; remorse and revulsion.
Light In The Attic also re-released Rodriguez's 2nd album from 1971, "Coming From Reality" as well.
One has to wonder what Rodriguez will do now that he is touring again, further plans for music of the same strain? What sort of things would Rodriguez sing about today?
If you're in NYC and like what you hear, check him out at the bowery ballroom, may 15th.

Rhythm Trax vol. 4

the track playing in the above video is "purple".

Dam Funk is the part of the reason why a certain west coast label has stayed so strong over the last few years. Because said label has reaches far and wide, and doesn't hesitate to yank their artist's content from even lil ole sites like *Dr.t & the ladies* this will remain a rx confidential...
enjoy!

Trax vol. 4

Nite Jewel - Good Evening

Dr. T COSIGN >>> NITE JEWEL.
This girl duo from L.A. makes dreamy music with blurry casio melodies and funny drum machines. Good Evening, the 2008 debut, is sort of similar to The Chromatics & Glass Candy (in lady musicking terms) but has much more in common (recording wise) with Ariel Rosenberg (Ariel Pink).
Good Evening is so good you can't even understand what the hell is going on.
Sounds a lot like coming down off ecstasy, the next day, 3 joints into recovery.
Dr. T says - do what you gotta do, cop that GOOD EVENING.

7 days of Disco

Play one for each day of the week. doctors orders, no refills.

Let no man put asunder (ron hardy re-edit) - First Choice

Don't make me wait
- Peech Boys

Native New Yorker - Odyssey

Right back to you
- Ten City (larry levan)

I was born this way (shep pettibone extended mix) - Carl Bean - gay anthem.

Heartbeat (12" mix)
- Taana Gardner & Larry Levan

Kiss me again - Dinosaur (arthur russell)

Timothy Leary - Turn on, Tune in, Drop out

Timothy Leary's - Turn on, Tune in, Drop out was dropped in 1967, as a means of spreading the gospel of acid. The album is mainly the spoken word narrative of Leary leading a trip, which is interspersed with sitar, drums, and assortment of all the other lynchpin's of psychedelia.

Timothy Leary and Dr. T, the leaders in alternative therapies towards supreme enlightenment for citizens of the decaying west.

Turn on, Tune in, Drop out O.S.T.

Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti

Ariel Pink is fucking weird. and also weirdly talented.
This dude has put out over 500 songs on cassette
(which is also the favored format of so many of those
westcoast psychedelic krautrock-ish noisemakers of current times).
That being said, where to start with a deeply musical weirdo, how about a 7"?
A recent discovery of the doctor,
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Can't hear my eyes/Evolution's a lie.
These 2 nuggets represent two very different and very enjoyable aspects of the Ariel Pink Haunted Graffiti experience.
Can't hear my eyes is super loungey,
while evolution's a lie has a rumbling noisy anxious quality.
enjoy!

Teengirl Fantasy & a note on missing the bus

Living the life of an MD in the big city can be taxing. The doctor has a hard time keeping track of all his appointments, clients, and internetting responsibilities, much less social obligations.
Missing out on shows blows. Because of busy business over the last week and a half, the doctor totally forgot and therefore did not attend 3 events featuring one of his favored musical combos that graced the fair urban utopia of his practices.
Teengirl Fantasy, i lament missing out on such a chance opportunity to dance to your lovely tuneage.
In subsequent angst and pricklyness, dr. t has decided to break out the little black bag and feature the tgif ep and a dublab.com set from '08. Take heed and on an empty stomache.

45:33: Nike Original Run -James Murphy

Keeping with the theme of featuring tracks by electronic artists who have partnered up with major sneaker companies, Dr. T would like to direct the reader's attention to 45:33: Nike Original Run.
James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem released this long player two years ago, which features a number of DFA tracks sampled and spliced and mutated into the perfect music for jogging. Not really, but this almost all instrumental jam was commissioned for something akin to jogging, at least in the doctor's eyes. Great Cardio right here ladies n gents.

45:33

Theo Parrish

Theo Parrish is a producer of great esteem held dearly by thee Dr. T.
A longtime lover and enthusiast of electronic music and its cultural roots, Dr. T invited the gentle reader to investigate the sonic stylings of Theo Parrish in this short video made by adidas last spring '08. Parrish, has garnered a lot of media attention from the usual suspects within the electronic music industry, most notably for his stance on the trajectory of his music, its place within the framework of "house" music and the issue of race as an african american musician/artist/producer. Dr. T co-signs on Theo Parrish's expression, albeit with minor adjustments and disagreements along the way. (its all complex!)
Please enjoy Lakeshore Drive, a Theo Parrish sultry scorcher of springtime seductiveness.

Music from TWIN PEAKS

Doctor Tee's favorite television series of all time, Twin Peaks, was not only the brainchild of deep weirdo David Lynch, but also aurally orchestrated by Angelo Badalamenti, renowned film composer. AB and DL had collaborated on a number of DL's projects (Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive) all of which were really fucking creepy, of course aided by AB's hilarious and macabre ambient and jazzy instrumentals. The Twin Peaks soundtrack is awesome not only for the sinister and cartoonish appeal of the instrumental tracks but also the tracks with ethereal vocal accompaniment by the most underrated brilliant weird girl Julee Cruise. She has a Broadcast, Cocteau Twins, (perhaps one might wager) Kate bush sort of quality to her range.

Music from Twin Peaks - Angelo Badalamenti

SUN ARAW

Beach Head is an LP released by Sun Araw in the fall of 2008. Sun Araw is an experimental genre crossing, genre defying band on the not not fun label. www.notnotfun.com for more info. The sound is sorta like Godspeed (less loud and desperate), sorta Jesu-esque (more upbeat and dreamy) sorta like Glenn Branca (not so heavy and strident, more on the meandering tip).
Its complicated. very hazy, very seductive and very anti-linear.
This record is best represented by the featured video for the song "Horse Steppin";
a surfin safari of post apocalyptic zombie jesus freaks. yeah, its like that.

Serge Gainsbourg - Les Annees Psychedeliques 1966 - 1971

For those unfamiliar with the very specific brand of sleaze that serge gainsbourg offers, refer to his best known hit to date, je taime - moi non plus.
Les Annees Psychedeliques is where Serge struts the proto funk/psych jazz border, creating large solid orchestrations of melody, steady backbeats, fiery brass, and sexpot vocals with various female chanteuses. Included with the compilation are bonus beat followups to songs like "requiem pour un con" and "la horse".

Memories are my only witness (2002) - Yuka Honda

aaahh yes, Yuka Honda, 1/2 the flavor of the doctors favorite band from pre-med days, Cibo Matto. after the madness was all eaten up, Yuka Honda went on to record this instrumental electronic album full of the sort of stuff that clearly illustrates what role she played in C.M.
ethereal soundscapes, with or without syncopated rhythms, exploratory, tad bit beyond slightly cheesy, fun.

Maria Bethania - Carcará

This Lady is for real.

Carcará sung by Maria Bethania, written by João do Vale.

the 1st single of her career, a protest song about the brazilian military dictatorship debuted in 1965.
loosely translated, the song chronicles a bird of prey (hawk) as it catches, kills and eats all in its way. raw!

Dert - Talk Strange - a beat tape inspired by Bjork

Yet another Beat tape from last year, '08 had people knodding their heads all the way into the first days of spring 2009. with this crazy weather we're having and current astrological meltdown of sorts (more on that later) the doctor prescribes something to take on the go, Talk Strange by Dert.
Much Like Black Milk's color purple (prince) fiasco, talk strange is a fun innovative and exciting beat tape that samples bjork and creates new riffs on a classic artist. And i felt tired of Bjork, not the case after i heard this tape.

talk strange

Black Milk - Music from the colour purple

This is ridiculous. Black Milk sampled a bunch of Prince records and created a bang out beat tape. At the end of each beat the original Prince snippet is revealed, to relieve all who are mystified by what they hear.
